Between the hills of Notranjska, the Inner Carniola region in Slovenia lies a hidden stream which has carved its path through a steep gorge. The Iška stream does not stand out for its size, but for the fact that large sections of it remain entirely natural. Our 4-hour hike takes us over small paths into the steep gorge, along the stream and back.
In this place, we can imagine a world without human beings. The sun shines through the leaves of the forest and sparkles in the water. Damselflies flash dark violet wings and high above, in the canopy, forest butterflies chase one another. On rocky outcroppings, Hairy alpenrose, Rhododendron hirsutum, flowers. This small shrub grows in several isolated populations in the region, likely as remnants from the last ice-age 10.000 years ago. Other plants attract our attention as well: Alpine butterwort, Pinguicula alpina, which is carnivorous, and the endemic primrose Primula carniolica, which flowers in the early spring.

Moderate to occasionally demanding. In this 4-hour tour, we walk about 4 kilometres at an easy pace. We largely follow unpaved roads and smaller paths. The valley is steep, so expect to walk little on level-ground but no serious climbing. The route is suitable for children over 12 years.
If you have your own transport, we can meet in Nova vas on the Bloke plateau. From here, it will take us a 15 minutes drive to reach the starting point of our hike.
If you are bound to public transport, we can pick you up at any local accommodation, bus or train stations or even in Ljubljana – see details and additional fees for this service in the booking process.
